@ Mumbles Sailing Open (Wales)

David Lucas

On the 8th and 9th of June myself, fellow Invictus student David and a friend from Himley Hall Sailing club, Matthew were able to attend a sailing open in Mumbles. Although the racing didn’t start till 12:30, for us it started at 6:00am on the Saturday morning hitching up the Boat trailer and beginning the 4hour journey from Himley to Mumbles Yacht club near Swansea. As we arrived it was a scramble to get everything set up quickly In time for the beginning of the race, however due to the wind speed being extremely fast (30mph with gusts of 40mph) all three of us made the tactical decision not to race and instead “preserve our strength” for the next day which had more promising wind speeds.

As Sunday began the wind was looking to be much kinder towards us, as we all set about prepping the boats for racing. There were 4 races on the Sunday, the first race seemed promising as good wind conditions allowed me to obtain a first place in class with David in 5th and Mathew in 6th. Due to a bad start on the second race I was unable to pull off such a victory again leading me to come 6th whilst David and Mathew moved to 3rd and 4th respectively. Race 3 was a similar story to Race 2 in terms of starting although I was able to pull a lot back and catch Mathew just before the line to end up 5th with David 4th and Mathew ending up 6th. Myself and Mathew retired from the racing after Race 3 due to a close shave with another boat which would of ended with both of us going for a short swim. Fortunately I was able to turn the boat away from the oncoming vessel to avoid contact with it, I was unable however to dodge the contact from my boom swinging over and crashing into the side of my head, I understand now why it’s called a boom… David on the other hand was able to complete Race 4 coming in 4th place.

At the end we all packed the boats back on to the road trailer and went into the club house for the presentations, and ultimately find out how we had done. In our class David came 4th, Myself 5th and Mathew 6th occupying 11th, 13th and 14th in the overall results. We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all those who organised the event, those who crewed safety boats and tallied the laps at Mumbles Yacht Club. I would also like to thank all parents who supported us in getting boats ready and transporting them to the club. With one final thank you from David and myself to the Invictus Education Trust for giving us the opportunity to take their boats racing at Mumbles and also for introducing us to the sport in the first place.
