Invictus Dancers Wow Audiences at the Motionhouse Dance Theatre

5 June 2019

Talented dancers from across The Invictus Education Trust have had the fantastic experience of working with Motionhouse Dance Theatre. This dance company are a highly acclaimed regionally based company who tour both nationally and internationally. The project was organised by Becky Giles (Dance teacher from Ellowes Hall) in collaboration with Black Country Dance Hub. A selection of students representing: Ounsdale, Kinver, Crestwood and Ellowes participated in an intensive three day’s of Contemporary Dance workshops and rehearsals at Ellowes Hall that were led by  the rehearsal director for Motionhouse, Junior Cunningham who was extremely impressed by our dancers resilience and commitment. During this time Junior choreographed an original performance piece with these students which involved exploring movement ideas inspired by a duet performed by Motionhouse called ‘Knot’. The work involved an immense level of challenge for the students involving contact work, lifts  and trust which was no mean feat considering these students had never worked together before, but the Invictus dancers exceeded expectations!

Following on from this initial stage of the project the Invictus dancers then had the opportunity to perform this dance piece at Walsall Forest Arts Centre on 20th May. The work was showcased during a triple bill of Motionhouse’s evening performance. Prior to this final show the pressure was on for our dancers to remember the piece and perform in this professional theatre setting. Again our students rose to the challenge and demonstrated a professional attitude throughout the technical rehearsals and the following performance. During the evening the students also experienced the high energy, physically charged performances by Motionhouse Dance Theatre who are well known for pushing movement to the limit and our students were totally mesmerised by this professional dance company’s work. This proved to be a fantastic opportunity for our students to reinforce the links for performing arts across the Invictus Trust and access dance within a professional environment.
